BJ Lifton Adoptee Rights Activist has passed away

Betty Jean Lifton, adoptee, author, counselor and adoptee rights activist, passed away on 19 November in Massachusetts, USA, from complications with pneumonia.

'BJ' was well-known in the adoption community for her books, including Lost and Found: The Adoption Experience and Journey of the Adopted Self: A Quest for Wholeness. She spoke widely at adoption conferences and was a strong advocate of the right of adoptees to access their original birth certificates.

New adoption laws in Queensland

The new Adoption Act 2009 and Post Adoption Service Queensland came into operation in the State of Queensland on 1 February 2010. The new Act introduces many reforms to existing adoption practice in Queensland, creating greater harmonisation with adoption practices in other states.

Under the new provisions, no one can be denied access to their information. Individuals, if they wish, may still lodge a range of contact preferences, but so long as a person seeking information agrees to not contact that person, they will be given their information.

This is great news for the 500 Queenslanders (nearly 10 a week) who approach Adoption Services for identifying information every year.

The Queensland government has also committed $1.2 million dollars over the next three year to establish a new state-wide post-adoption support service that will provide more opportunity for counselling and other services to be available to all parties. The service, beginning on 1 February, will be run by the Benevolent Society in partnership with Jigsaw Queensland and Link-up.
